On a Roman bus...

75 minutes tickets (BIT)
It costs lire 1.500 and can be bought from the green automatic distributors and ATAC kiosks that can be found near large bus stations. The tickets can also be bought from tobacconists and news-paper kiosks. Remember that the automatic distributors give a maximum change of 2.000 lire, so don't put a 10.000 lire note in the machine to buy only one 75 minute ticket. You must validate the ticket when you get on the bus. When the validity expires another ticket needs to be validate. This ticket is valid on all bus, underground and COTRAL train lines: Roma-Lido (From Magliana, the ticket is valid up to Cristoforo Colombo) Roma-Viterbo: (From Stazione San Pietro it's valid up to La Storta) Roma-Viterbo: (From Fla-minio the ticket it's valid up to La Giustiniana). All tickets can be used also on FS trains within the area of the Comune di Roma. On trains the tickets can be used one way only. On the underground only one journey can be made.

One day ticket
(BIG) This ticket costs 6.000 lire. Beware! Unlike the 24 hour day pass in Florence, the Roman equivalent is not a 24 hours ticket. It expires at midnight on the day in which it has been validated, like Cinderella's gift. There are also day tickets for all destinations in Lazio (the region around Rome) and are called BIRG. If you buy your day ticket from the automatic machines use, use the map that can be found on them to select its area of validity.

Week card
This costs 24.000 lire and can be bought from ATAC kiosks only (there is one at the bus terminus in front of Termini station). It seems to be the best value if you are staying in Rome that long.

Month card
It can be bought at the beginning of every Month and costs 50.000 lire or 30.000 lire if you are younger than 20 or older than 65. It can be bought from the ATAC kiosks and the tobacconists. Beware, this card is not valid for 30 days but only for a calendar Month, so don't buy it at the middle of the Month! This card is personalised with your name and signature and is valid on all public transports.

Impersonal month card
Different from the simple Month card this one can be lent. It costs 70.000 lire and can be useful in some particular cases.

Year card
The price for this ticket is 360.000 lire. It is valid on all public transports and is personalised with a photograph. It can be bought from main COTRAL and FS stations; from the ATAC office in Largo Mondaytemartini 20; and from major Banks.

Remember
that the underground stops at 11.30pm (it starts at 5.30am). Last buses leave their termini at midnight. There are night buses (midnight - 5.30am) whose itineraries and timetables can be found written at all bus stops.

A tour of Rome on a old fashoned A.T.A.C bus
Everyday at 2.30pm there is an ATAC blue bus that leaves from the square in front of Termini station (Piazza dei Cinquecento). The number of this bus is 110 and it will take you all around the city for about 3 hours making stops at the main sites. The ticket costs 15.000 lire and can be bought from the ATAC kiosks and information office in Piazza dei Cinquecento (tel. 46.95.20.52). Brochures in Italian, English, French, German and Spanish can be found on the bus. We wish you a pleasant tour!

Free...

Bus stops and bus tickets
At the bus stop, under the bus numbers, there's a list of the places the buses go (from the start to the terminus). The one marked in the red square is the place where you are. At the bottom you'll find the time of the first and the last run. The numbers on a black background are the night buses. Beneth there are the times of their expected departures from their termini. Tickets can be bought from tobacconists and main bus stations. There are also many automatic distributors which work with coins and notes: just chose your own language and follow the instructions. A word of advice: these machines don't give more than 2.000 lire change, so if you need only one 75 minute ticket (1.500 lire) don't insert a 10.000 lire note! Note: 75 minute tickets are also valid for the local train lines such as Flaminio-Giustiniana, San Pietro-La Storta, Magliana-Cristoforo Colombo.
