Spiriti in via S. Eustachio is not open every night, but pass by to see. It is very relaxed--you will see the neighborhood regulars and maybe a beautiful boxer dog seated at about 6 small round tables inside and a few outside. The young staff usually has a tape of American music playing and the large wine list is very affordably priced. The food menu is very limited.

dell'Operai in p.za S. Eustachio. Give the ambiance a second chance. Good prices for wine, sometimes limited selection by the glass, and good antipasta.

La Casa del Tramezzino, Viale Trastevere 81 (no phone). Bus to Viale Trastevere. Open 7 a.m.-2 a.m., closed on Tuesday. La Casa del Tramezzino has the widest choice of sandwiches anywhere in Rome. There's table service outside in the street.

Trastè, Via della Lungaretta 76. Open 5.30 p.m.-midnight, closed on Monday. Trastevere's most cultured bar, and the most comfortable place in the neighborhood for solo drinking.

Bar San Calisto, Piazza san Calisto 4. Open 7 a.m.-1 a.m.; closed on Sunday. In August closes 1 p.m.-5 p.m. but stays open on Sunday. This rough bar is also the purveyor of wonderful home-made ice cream.
