The first Jews in Rome came directly from Eretz Israel in 160 B.

It was Chanukah and the Macabbeem decided to go as ambassador to
Rome asking protection to the Romans against the Greek king
Antiochus who was giving a hard time to the Jews in Palestine.
So they came to Rome, they liked it (Roma has got a nice climate,
there was an important harbour, they saw there was a chance to
start a business here).
This little group of Jews settled and create the first community
in the Golah. |

In 70 A.C. Titus destroyed the Temple of Jerusalem. He brought
to Rome a lot of Jews as slaves, together with the Menorah
stolen from the Temple. The Jews living in Rome paid a ransom to
liberate their brothers.
All that happened more than 2000 years ago…and we are still here,
after the Inquisition, the persecutions, the Ghetto and the
concentration camps. |

We are only 16 thousands in Rome. But we are the oldest citizens
of this city. We never moved from here. We have been witnesses
of so many changes and even though we keep our tradition
strongly trying to live a Jewish life among Christians.
You must visit the Ghetto with someone that
can take you through all that with knowledge, anecdotes, legends
and humour. (Text courtesy of Mrs. Micaela Pavoncello) |
