ALESSIA'S ARCHAEOLOGICAL ADVICE

written by Alessia Vivaldi  for © Nerone the Insider's Guide to Rome

Many of the streets of Rome recall the ancient Roman roads: From the Colosseum take Via di St.Gregorio until you get to P.zza di Porta Capena. Here walk up the Salita di St.Gregorio and you will get to the Clivo di Scauro. This is an old Roman road on which you can see the facades of the buildings that used to look on to it. In the 2nd century b.C. these buildings were houses which are now well preserved to quite a lenght and connected by medieval arches which pass-over the street about three metres from the ground level.

Walking along the Clivo you get to the square of St.Giovanni e Paolo. You can take Via St.Paolo della Croce, another ancient Roman road, and here you will find an arch (Arco di Dolabella) over which passed the Aqueduct that was built by the Emperor Nerone to bring water to the Domus Aurea (his Palace). You can fallow the Aqueduct by taking Via di St.Stefano Rotondo (in front of you).

On this street you can stop to visit the very distinctive Church of St. Stefano... round and beautiful (Mon3:30-6:00pm;Tue & Sat 9:00-1:00pm/ 3:30-6:00pm)
